Lewis’s legendary novels.

Who Is Kobna Holdbrook-Smith?

If the name feels familiar, it should. Holdbrook-Smith is one of Britain’s most decorated theatrical talents — he took home the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Ike Turner in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and was awarded an M.B.E. for his services to drama.

On screen, he’s anything but a newcomer. You’ve seen him in beloved family films like Paddington 2, Mary Poppins Returns, and Wonka, blockbusters like Marvel’s Doctor Strange and Justice League, and fantasy television — most notably as Balthamos in the BBC/HBO adaptation of His Dark Materials. In short, he’s made for a world like Narnia.

Who Does He Play — And Why Does It Matter?

Holdbrook-Smith is set to portray Francis, widely understood to be Frank the Cabby from C.S. Lewis’s original novel. In the book, Frank is a hardworking London cab driver who gets accidentally swept across dimensions — along with his horse Strawberry and the terrifying Queen Jadis — by the young protagonists Digory and Polly.

What makes this character so remarkable is what happens next. Frank witnesses Aslan singing Narnia into existence from nothingness, and this ordinary man of quiet goodness is then chosen by the great lion himself to become Narnia’s very first King. It’s one of the most moving character arcs in the entire series — a humble cabby crowned at the dawn of a world. Casting an actor of Holdbrook-Smith’s calibre and warmth here is genuinely inspired.

The Full Star-Studded Cast So Far

This is one of the most stacked ensembles assembled for a fantasy film in years — and Greta Gerwig herself has spoken about her lifelong love of Lewis’s world, calling it the honour of a lifetime to bring it to the screen.

The Big Date Shift — And Why It’s a Good Thing

Originally slated for a 2026 release, the film has been pushed to 2027 to allow for a full IMAX theatrical rollout worldwide before landing on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Far from being a red flag, this signals Netflix is treating Narnia as a genuine cinematic event — not just a streaming drop. IMAX sneak previews kick off as early as February 10, 2027.
