My Royal Nemesis: The Director Spills Why This Cast Is a Match Made in Joseon Heaven

If you haven’t added My Royal Nemesis to your K-drama watchlist yet, director Han Tae Seop’s casting confessions might just change that. From a first-choice lead to an unexpected comedian, the behind-the-scenes story of putting this drama together is almost as compelling as the show itself.

My Royal Nemesis — Drama Snapshot

Lim Ji Yeon Was Always the One

Director Han Tae Seop revealed that Lim Ji Yeon was the top choice for both him and the writer, calling her a “one-and-only casting choice” whose natural qualities closely match those of Shin Seo Ri — a character who steadfastly believes in herself.

But it wasn’t just her charm that sealed the deal. During a winter filming scene where her character drinks poison and dies, the director said he became so absorbed in Lim Ji Yeon’s performance that he forgot the cold — describing her as an actress who creates a deeply realistic sense of immersion.

That’s the kind of praise that makes you sit up straight.

Heo Nam Jun: The Surprise Package

Han Tae Seop admitted he originally cast Heo Nam Jun for his “homme fatale” charm — but then discovered he also had genuine comedic talent, something that elevates his character Cha Se Gye far beyond a typical brooding chaebol.

Even on set, he noted that once the cameras rolled, Lim Ji Yeon and Heo Nam Jun focused entirely on each other’s performances, creating both lighthearted fun and deep emotional moments — a dynamic that made the director feel genuinely grateful.

This kind of natural, unforced chemistry is exactly what separates a good K-drama from a great one. Learn more about the history of Korean romantic comedies on Wikipedia.

Jang Seung Jo: The Villain You’ll Feel Sorry For

Director Han Tae Seop praised Jang Seung Jo for bringing a multifaceted quality to Choi Moon Do — a character he described as “compelling, chilling, and at times even pitiful,” shaped through long conversations between the two about how a villain is both similar to and different from ordinary people.

A villain you actually understand? That’s rare — and we’re already intrigued.
