My Brilliant Career: Netflix’s Newest Period Drama Has Main Character Energy, Bridgerton Vibes Included

Forget quiet, corseted heroines. Netflix’s “My Brilliant Career” hands us a leading lady who’s loud, ambitious, and refuses to play by turn-of-the-century rules — and the result is one of the streamer’s most charming period dramas yet.

What the Show Is About

Adapted from Miles Franklin’s classic early-1900s novel, the series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a fiercely independent young woman in rural Australia who dreams of becoming a writer instead of a wife. When her family falls into financial ruin, the pressure shifts to Sybylla to marry wealthy — setting up a love triangle between two very different suitors while she fights to hold onto her own ambitions.

Why It Works

Philippa Northeast’s performance as Sybylla is being singled out as the show’s biggest strength — sharp-witted, rebellious, and instantly comparable to Netflix favorites like Eloise Bridgerton, just relocated to the Australian bush instead of Regency England. The series also introduces new characters not in the original novel, including Nell Kirby, a First Nations horse trainer whose own fight for independence mirrors Sybylla’s.

The anachronistic soundtrack — remixing songs from artists like Blondie and Rod Stewart into a period-appropriate style — echoes the Bridgerton playbook and, according to reviewers, actually lands without feeling gimmicky.

The Bottom Line

“My Brilliant Career” isn’t a strict page-to-screen adaptation, but for viewers wanting an indulgent, romantic period drama with a fiercely independent lead, it delivers exactly that. If Bridgerton or Little Women is your comfort watch, this belongs on your list.
