MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z: 1,000W GPU With 360mm AIO Cooler

MSI unveiled the GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z at CES 2026—the world’s first GPU exceeding 1,000W with next-gen liquid cooling. Co-developed with NVIDIA, this flagship features 40-phase VRM, dual 12V-2×6 connectors supporting 1,600W, and a massive full-surface LCD display. Only 1,300 units ship globally in February 2026.

MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z: Extreme Engineering

The Lightning Z operates at 800W in OC mode and 1,000W in Extreme mode—requiring 1,600W+ PSU. Default boost clock hits 2,730 MHz, increasing to 2,775 MHz through MSI Center’s Extreme Profile—over 300 MHz faster than NVIDIA’s 2,407 MHz Founders Edition. An XOC BIOS enables 2,500W for extreme overclocking, with world-record runs already achieving 3.75 GHz.

The custom PCB packs 40 VRM phases—exceeding even Galax HOF 5090D’s 36/38-phase design—using 3oz copper for improved conductivity, cooling, and stability. “Lightning-grade” components deliver cleaner voltages, less noise, and more stable power delivery. This reinforced high-power design unlocks exceptional compute density and overclocking headroom beyond standard RTX 5090 expectations.

Next-Gen Liquid Cooling Architecture

The integrated full-contact cold plate extends coverage across GPU, memory, and all high-power stages. MSI’s next-gen pump increases liquid flow by 71% and pressure by 44.5%, transferring heat faster than previous generations. The patented hybrid-density radiator uses zoned fin spacing—dense fins at hot areas, sparse at cool—delivering 4.5% performance increase.

Silent, high-pressure axial fans with redesigned aerodynamic blades boost static pressure at low noise, reducing GPU temps by 11% while operating quieter than MSI’s RTX 5090 SUPRIM Liquid. The full-copper, full-cover cold plate ensures liquid flows over core, VRAM, and MOSFETs for comprehensive component cooling.

The world’s first full-surface display enables real-time system visualization and personalization. A dedicated mobile app allows monitoring and customizing overclocking presets on-the-go. USB Type-C cable controls the “Lightning Panel” display, with vertical mounting kit and PCIe 5.0 riser cable included for optimal viewing angles.

MSI ships the Lightning Z with extensive accessories: GPU support stand, BIOS-switch tool for toggling between modes, NFC card, PCB thank you card, and three Lightning magnets. The limited production run emphasizes exclusivity targeting extreme overclockers willing to push hardware boundaries.

The Lightning Z has already shattered 17 world records ahead of launch, validating MSI’s engineering approach. Expect $4,000+ pricing competing with ASUS ROG Matrix Platinum RTX 5090, though DRAM shortages may impact availability and final cost. This represents rare over-engineered PC hardware pushing GPU design limits.
