MKBHD Faces Backlash for Reckless Driving Stunt in Latest Video

Popular tech YouTuber Marques ‘MKBHD‘ Brownlee is facing intense backlash after a segment in his latest video, “How My Video Gear Is Changing,” in which he engages in dangerous driving for content.

Brownlee was running tests on a new action camera, so he strapped it to his body and went for a ride in a Lamborghini, speeding through the school zone. Somehow, this reckless stunt attracted the attention of viewership who saw him getting up to 96mph in a 35mph zone.

Viewers slammed the video as irresponsible and dangerous with an immediate backlash. Brownlee had apparently blurred the speedometer to downplay just how wildly he was speeding, similar to the presentation of numerous high-speed clips people shared. However, eagle-eyed viewers caught sight of a hidden speedo in the same video which only confirmed this when it revealed a top speed for the car of 96mph. This led some critics to accuse him of trying to minimize the seriousness of what he had done.

One user wrote, “He’s attempting to sweep it under the rug,” while another noted that the footage could be enough to have his license revoked in some places. Following the widespread criticism, Brownlee took to social media to acknowledge his mistake. He had taken down the clip that stirred controversy and tweeted an apology describing what he did as “totally, utterly inexcusable and dangerous.”

Brownlee said he was sorry to be a bad role model and that he’ll never do it again. In his tweet, he stated, “All I can do is apologize and promise never to do anything close to that stupid again.” This emphasizes the risks of content creation for social media where dangerous stunts may be sometimes forgiven in pursuit of eye-catching visuals. Brownlee apologized, removed the footage, and so on but the fallout from his actions will be hard to brush under the carpet.
