Lewandowski, Poland’s most iconic footballer with 85 international goals in 158 appearances, openly expressed his dismay regarding the coach’s handling of the situation. Speaking to WP Sportowe Fakty, he detailed the abrupt nature of the call that cost him the captain’s armband.

“I got a surprise call from coach Michał Probierz that he had decided to take away my armband (captaincy). I was not prepared for it at all, I was putting my children to sleep. The conversation lasted about a minute. I didn’t even have time to inform my family or talk to anyone about what had happened, because a few moments later a message appeared on the PZPN website. The way in which this was communicated to me is really surprising to me,” Lewandowski said.

Shortly after, the striker announced his decision to withdraw from international duty, adding further pressure on the already embattled coach.

Poor Results Amplify Pressure

While the personal drama alone created a volatile environment, Poland’s recent 2-1 defeat to Finland added fuel to the fire. The shock loss endangered their hopes of qualifying for future international tournaments, intensifying scrutiny on Probierz’s leadership.
