For Metroid fans, the wait for Metroid Prime 4 has felt like an eternity. Announced back in 2017, all we’ve seen since is a solitary logo, fueling speculation and anticipation.

Thankfully, the recent Nintendo Direct finally brought an end to the information drought with the unveiling of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, along its first gameplay trailer.

The wait, however, isn’t quite over. While the trailer showcases a visually stunning return to the atmospheric first-person exploration and intense combat that define the Metroid Prime series, the release date sits firmly in 2025. This extended wait could hint at a potential dual launch for the Nintendo Switch’s successor, though Nintendo has remained tight-lipped on that front.

A Glimpse into the Beyond

The Metroid Prime 4: Beyond trailer opens with the iconic Samus Aran landing on a desolate alien world. The visuals are immediately striking, pushing the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo Switch further than ever seen before. We see Samus transition seamlessly between first-person exploration and her signature visor scanning mechanics, a core gameplay element of the series.

The action heats up quickly as Samus encounters familiar foes – the nefarious Space Pirates. The trailer showcases a thrilling firefight, with Samus utilizing her trusty arm cannon to unleash a barrage of powerful beams and missiles. The combat appears fluid and responsive, retaining the satisfying weight and tactical depth that Metroid Prime veterans have come to expect.

The trailer then takes a more ominous turn, revealing a mysterious cloaked figure wielding a powerful weapon. This unidentified bounty hunter seems to be a significant antagonist for Samus, hinting at a thrilling narrative to unfold. The scene then shifts to a lush, vibrant alien world, showcasing the diverse environments players can expect to explore in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

A Cross-Gen Adventure?

While the visuals are undeniably impressive, it’s important to temper expectations. The trailer likely represents the Nintendo Switch version of the game. With the release date set for 2025, speculation naturally leans towards a potential cross-gen launch for the rumored Nintendo Switch successor.

This would make perfect sense, allowing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond to truly shine on more powerful hardware while still delivering a solid experience on the current Switch platform.

The Long Road to Beyond: Metroid Prime 4

The development of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been a rollercoaster ride. Originally planned as a collaboration with Bandai Namco, the project was eventually rebooted and handed back to series veterans Retro Studios. This undoubtedly contributed to the extended development cycle. Regardless, the wait seems to be worthwhile based on the brief glimpse offered by the trailer.

Looking Ahead

The reveal of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is a cause for celebration for Metroid fans. While the 2025 release date might feel like a distant dream, the trailer promises a visually stunning and action-packed return to the beloved series. Whether it’s on the Nintendo Switch or its successor, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is poised to be a major title, offering a thrilling blend of exploration, atmosphere, and intense combat.
