Marvel Just Handed the X-Men to a Whole New Generation

No Hugh Jackman claws, no Patrick Stewart wheelchair — Marvel’s X-Men reboot is starting from scratch, and the cast list dropped at D23 proves it.

Announced by Kevin Feige at the Disney Entertainment Showcase, the film marks the X-Men‘s first standalone outing since Disney absorbed 21st Century Fox’s mutant library. It arrives in theaters May 5, 2028, directed by Thunderbolts filmmaker Jake Schreier.

The biggest surprise of the reveal wasn’t a hero — it was a villain. Driver had long been rumored for Magneto, but Marvel confirmed via a video message that he’s actually playing Nathaniel Milbury, the human alter ego of geneticist-turned-supervillain Mister Sinister. It’s a sharp left turn from fan expectations, and exactly the kind of swerve Marvel casting reveals have become known for.

Why This Reboot Matters

Fox’s X-Men saga wrapped with Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, leaving Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine as its most enduring legacy. Since then, mutants have crept back into MCU canon through Deadpool & Wolverine and X-Men ’97, plus legacy-cast cameos — Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammer in The Marvels.

That legacy cast isn’t done yet, either. Stewart, Grammer, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn all return in Avengers: Doomsday this December, alongside Channing Tatum’s Gambit — meaning old and new X-Men will essentially exist side by side for a while.

Marvel hasn’t confirmed who plays Beast in the new film, so expect more reveals ahead of the 2028 release.
