Manoj Bajpayee’s Inspector Zende Trailer Ignites Mumbai’s Most Wanted Hunt Against Jim Sarbh

Netflix has unleashed the electrifying trailer for Inspector Zende, marking another stellar performance by Manoj Bajpayee as the sharp-witted Mumbai police inspector Madhukar Zende. The crime thriller, set to premiere on September 5, 2025, showcases an epic cat-and-mouse chase between Mumbai’s most determined cop and one of the most notorious criminals in Indian criminal history.

The Deadly Game of Cat and Mouse Begins

The trailer opens with Carl Bhojraj (Jim Sarbh) making a daring escape from Tihar Jail, immediately catching Interpol’s attention as one of their most wanted criminals. The Mumbai Police, desperate to capture this elusive fugitive, turns to their secret weapon – Inspector Madhukar Zende, affectionately known as “Mumbai ka pandu”.

Manoj Bajpayee’s portrayal promises to deliver another memorable performance in his extensive repertoire of law enforcement roles. Speaking about his experience, Bajpayee revealed: “What fascinated me about Inspector Zende was that he wasn’t chasing glory — he was just doing his job, yet caught one of the most notorious criminals twice. His bravery, humour, and that unmistakable Mumbai flavour make his journey truly inspiring”.

Jim Sarbh’s Chilling Transformation

Jim Sarbh undergoes a remarkable transformation as Carl Bhojraj, a character inspired by the infamous Charles Sobhraj, known as the “bikini killer”. The trailer showcases Sarbh’s versatility as he embodies the charming yet sinister persona of a globe-trotting criminal who has managed to evade capture across multiple countries.

The character is dubbed “The Swimsuit Killer,” drawing inspiration from Sobhraj, whom the real Inspector Zende apprehended twice. This fictional adaptation allows the filmmakers to explore the psychological depths of both the hunter and the hunted.

From Mumbai Streets to European Hideouts

The narrative structure promises an international chase that moves from Mumbai to Europe, where simple yet determined cops vow to catch the serial killer once again.

The high-stakes pursuit showcases the determination of Indian law enforcement agencies working beyond geographical boundaries to ensure justice prevails.

Production Excellence and Direction

Written and directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar and produced by Jay Shewakramani and Om Raut, Inspector Zende represents a significant collaboration between established filmmakers and streaming giant Netflix. Director Mandlekar explained: “Inspector Zende’s real-life chase had all the ingredients of a gripping film: a larger-than-life cop, a slippery antagonist, and an unforgettable era of Mumbai”.

Supporting Cast Brings Mumbai’s Flavor

The ensemble cast includes seasoned actors who bring authenticity to the Mumbai police narrative. Veterans Sachin Khedekar and Bhalchandra Kadam, along with Harish Dudhade, Onkar Raut, Bharat Savale, and Nitin Bhajan form Zende’s trusted team, while Girija Oak and Vaibhav Mangale appear in pivotal roles.

The chemistry between Manoj Bajpayee and his team promises to deliver both intense action sequences and moments of levity that characterize the best police procedurals. The witty banter between Zende and his senior officer (Sachin Khedekar) appears particularly entertaining in the trailer.

Netflix’s Strategic Crime Content Push

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, director of Original Films at Netflix India, emphasized that the film puts a fresh spin on the conventional cop-versus-criminal narrative by “deftly blending comedy and crime to deliver something truly unexpected”. This approach aligns with Netflix’s strategy of creating content that celebrates local heroes while appealing to global audiences.

The timing of Inspector Zende’s release coincides with Manoj Bajpayee’s continued dominance in the OTT space, particularly following his success with “The Family Man” series and other Netflix originals like “Killer Soup.”

Historical Context and Real-Life Inspiration

The film draws from the exploits of real-life police officer Madhukar Zende, who worked in Mumbai during the 1970s and 1980s, during the manhunt for notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj. This historical grounding provides the narrative with authentic tension while allowing creative liberties that enhance the cinematic experience.

The 1970s and 80s Mumbai setting promises to showcase a city in transition, where “before the era of CCTV and cyber forensics, Mumbai had Inspector Madhukar Zende — a streetwise, instinct-driven cop who cracked impossible cases with grit, gut, and a dash of jugaad (resourcefulness)”.

Critical Reception and Anticipation

Early reactions to the trailer have been overwhelmingly positive, with audiences praising both Manoj Bajpayee’s commanding screen presence and Jim Sarbh’s menacing portrayal of the antagonist. The film’s blend of crime thriller elements with comedic moments appears to strike the right balance for contemporary audiences seeking both entertainment and substance.

The trailer promises “a nail-biter from start to finish,” with Netflix India turning up “the heat with the official trailer for its upcoming crime thriller”. The psychological duel between the determined inspector and the charismatic criminal creates compelling viewing that extends beyond typical cop-chase narratives.

Inspector Zende represents more than just another crime thriller – it’s a celebration of Indian law enforcement’s dedication and the complex cat-and-mouse games that define the relationship between justice and criminality. With Manoj Bajpayee leading the charge and Jim Sarbh providing formidable opposition, Netflix’s latest offering promises to be a standout addition to the crime thriller genre.

The film’s September 5, 2025 release date marks another significant milestone in Netflix India’s commitment to producing high-quality regional content that resonates with both domestic and international audiences.
