Manchester Derby Chaos: PGMOL Admits “Error of Judgement” Over Haaland’s Controversial Winner

Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford will be remembered less for the scoreline and more for the storm that followed it. In the 60th minute, Erling Haaland turned home Josko Gvardiol’s deflected cross at the back post, and what should have been a routine derby moment instead became one of the season’s biggest refereeing talking points.

What Actually Happened

The assistant referee initially flagged Haaland offside. VAR stepped in, ruled him onside, and the goal stood. Simple enough — except Enzo Fernandez, standing in a more central offside position, had lunged at the same ball without touching it, making the offside call subjective rather than clear-cut.

Hours before Sunday’s fixture had even been fully digested, PGMOL released a statement conceding the VAR “did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.” Manchester United were contacted directly and offered an apology.

The Fallout

United boss Michael Carrick called the situation “worrying,” while defender Lisandro Martinez branded it an “injustice,” arguing he wouldn’t have left Fernandez unmarked had the City man not surged toward the ball. The admission has reignited long-running debate over VAR’s subjective offside calls — a conversation English football has wrestled with since the technology’s introduction.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just about three points. It’s a fresh dent in fans’ trust in VAR, arriving in a season already scrutinised for officiating consistency. PGMOL’s rare public apology shows accountability, but for United supporters, an admission of error doesn’t rewrite the result.
