Football doesn’t get more emotional than this. On Sunday, May 24, 2026, Pep Guardiola takes charge of Manchester City for the very last time — at home, at the Etihad, in a sun-drenched Premier League finale. On the other side? Aston Villa — fresh Europa League champions, still buzzing from their brilliant 3-0 win over Freiburg just days ago. Two celebrations. One pitch. Pure theatre.

The Story Behind This Fixture
This is Guardiola’s farewell match — a decade at City, 20 trophies, and a legacy that redefined English football forever. He signs off having already secured the FA Cup last weekend, making it a domestic double to close his era in style. Bernardo Silva and John Stones also play their last games for the club — expect one of the most emotional atmospheres the Etihad has ever seen.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, arrive on a completely different kind of high. Their Europa League final victory on Wednesday — a commanding 3-0 dismantling of Freiburg in Istanbul — was their first European trophy since 1982. The scenes of celebration from Villa fans will live long in the memory. But manager Unai Emery himself admitted pre-match: “It’s not easy to be focused” — hinting at a rotated, fatigued squad.
Form & Key Stats
| Team | Home/Away Record | Key Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Man City | W14 of 18 at Etihad, 44 goals scored | 3-0 is their most common scoreline (9 times) |
| Aston Villa | Europa League winners midweek | Key players likely rested after final |
Predicted Lineups
Man City (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Nunes, Stones, Guéhi, O’Reilly; Rodri, Silva; Semenyo, Cherki, Doki; Haaland
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Cash, Lindelöf, Mings, Maatsen; Luiz, Onana; Bailey, Rogers, Sancho; Abraham
Key absences for Villa include Boubacar Kamara and Alysson, while Watkins, McGinn and Tielemans are expected to be rested. Haaland starts for City, chasing his 28th league goal of the season — already Golden Boot secured with a five-goal cushion.
Prediction: Man City 3-0 Aston Villa
City have been near-invincible at the Etihad — the 3-0 scoreline has occurred nine times this season alone. With Villa emotionally and physically drained from their Europa League heroics, and City motivated to send their legendary boss off with a fitting victory, expect Guardiola’s side to dominate and deliver. A guard of honour for Pep, three points for City.
According to the Premier League’s official about page, Gameweek 38 fixtures all kick off simultaneously to ensure sporting integrity — making this one of the most dramatic days in English football every single season.
