Made in India Show Overview

What Is Made in India: A Titan Story About?

The series chronicles the tumultuous founding and near-collapse of Titan Company — today one of India’s most beloved consumer brands. At its heart is the dynamic between Xerxes Desai, the visionary who built Titan from the ground up, and JRD Tata, the legendary industrialist whose unwavering faith in Indian manufacturing kept the dream alive even when the numbers said otherwise.

Jim Sarbh plays Xerxes Desai with sharp precision, while Naseeruddin Shah brings gravitas and warmth to JRD Tata in a performance that anchors the entire series emotionally.

The Ending Explained — Titan’s Darkest Hour & Greatest Triumph

The crisis hits hard. In the final episodes, Titan faces its most challenging phase — declining sales, severe distribution failures, and internal friction that threatens the survival of the company. Retailers, accustomed to traditional mechanical watches or inexpensive imports, remain deeply skeptical of premium Indian-made quartz watches.

JRD refuses to abandon ship. As financial pressures mount, JRD’s support is severely tested during board meetings where the numbers offer little justification for continuing the venture. Yet, rather than yielding to financial concerns, JRD doubles down on his support for Xerxes. It is a profound act of conviction — a man betting on India itself.

Reinvention, not adjustment. Xerxes and his team realize that minor adjustments will not be enough to save Titan — they must reinvent the product entirely. The team pursues the engineering breakthrough that would eventually become the Titan Edge, an ultra-slim watch — a bold statement to the global watchmaking industry that Indian engineering can achieve world-class precision. Simultaneously, the team expands the Sonata brand to secure cash flow and broader market penetration.

The emotional payoff. The ultimate payoff centres on JRD Tata’s earlier vow — a promise not to wear a watch until India could manufacture a world-class timepiece of its own. When that moment finally arrives, it lands not just as a corporate milestone, but as a deeply moving act of national pride fulfilled. The ending shifts the focus from corporate achievements to a deeply emotional vindication, proving that an Indian brand can set global standards while becoming a source of national pride. p
