He started singing devotional music at kirtans, and now an entire city has named a day after him. Diljit Dosanjh’s journey is the stuff of legends — and it just got even more iconic.

The Big Honour

The Los Angeles City Council has officially declared January 6, 2027 as “Diljit Dosanjh Day”, recognising the global rockstar’s contributions to Punjabi music and his role in enhancing South Asian representation in mainstream American culture.

The resolution was presented to Dosanjh by councilwoman Monica Rodriguez on June 19, during his ongoing Dil-Luminati Tour in the US.

In a video capturing the emotional moment, Dosanjh said he was “speechless” as he processed the honour — before spontaneously singing a line from his 2009 song Los Angeles. Only Diljit could respond to that kind of news with a song. Pure magic. t2online

Dosanjh, 42, began as a devotional singer, performing at kirtans and gurdwaras, before his debut album Smile in 2005 catapulted him to stardom in Punjab. Over the years, he has released 13 more albums, with his film roles also earning major praise and box office success.

In 2023, he made history as the first Punjabi artist to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. His Dil-Luminati tours have since broken records for ticket sales by an Indian artist globally.
