“Little Fat Black Shirt”: How A Coffee Bill Turned Into A Body-Shaming Controversy For Subko

A trip for coffee shouldn’t end with a stranger typing an insult into a billing system. But that’s exactly what happened to a Bengaluru customer at Subko’s Koramangala outlet — and his Reddit post has now forced the coffee chain into a public reckoning.

What Actually Happened

The customer visited Subko The Craftery, ordered his food, paid the bill, and later checked his receipt. Under “Customer Detail,” instead of his name, it read: “Little fat black shirt.” He shared photos of the bill on Reddit under the title “Subko didn’t use my name. They used my body to describe me,” pointing out that staff had several neutral options available — his name, a table number, or a simple order ID — but chose his body type instead.

Why The Customer Pushed Back Harder

He directly challenged the idea that this could be brushed off as harmless. In his post, he argued that if a woman had been described this way on a receipt, few people would call it a joke — and that body-shaming shouldn’t get a pass just because the target was a man. For him, the real issue wasn’t just the specific words used, but the decision to identify a customer by appearance at all.

How Subko Responded

The company confirmed the employee had knowingly entered the description and called the incident what it was, stating plainly: “Fat shaming is wrong. Every form. Every time. No exceptions.” Subko said it attempted to contact the customer directly to apologize, took what it described as the strongest disciplinary action available, and is now revising how customer information gets recorded at checkout — folding the issue into staff induction training going forward. The brand also pointed the customer toward its Internal Complaints Commission for formal grievance redressal.
