Lionel Messi breaks another crazy Pele record in 7-2 win vs Maccabi Haifa

After struggling in his first season with PSG, Lionel Messi has finally regained his form in his second year with the French side. With his two goals and two assists against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, Messi has surpassed Pele for the most goals and assists combined.

The Brazilian icon achieved a total of 1,126 goal contributions during his career. And Messi now has 1,127 goals and assists throughout his time playing professional football for club and country.

The Argentine has become the first player across Europe’s top five leagues to score double-digit goals and provide double-digit assists for his club side so far this season. One of the only players to achieve this feat is Cody Gakpo, who plays for PSV Eindhoven.

Lionel Messi is now also the oldest player to score two goals and provide two assists in a Champions League game. His overall tally has risen to 11 goals and 12 assists in 16 games across all competitions.

The 35-year-old is in a great run of form right ahead of the World Cup. And on the back of a very impressive run of form as a whole, Argentina will be one of the favourites to win the tournament in Qatar.
