Jerseys with Stories from the Tournament

Each jersey in the collection has its own story, having been worn by Messi in various crucial matches of the World Cup. Two jerseys hail from the intense group stage battles, while the remaining four bear witness to Messi’s prowess in the knockout stages — the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the unforgettable final clash against France. The jerseys, artifacts of sporting history, encapsulate Messi’s journey through the tournament, marking a chapter in his illustrious career.

The Sweet Taste of World Cup Triumph

Lionel Messi, long celebrated as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, added the missing chapter to his storied career by leading Argentina to its first World Cup victory since 1986. The jerseys up for auction hold a special significance, representing Messi’s exceptional performance in each stage of the tournament, culminating in a historic triumph on the grandest stage of all.

A Closer Look at the Finals

The jersey worn by Messi in the World Cup Final against France, regarded as one of the greatest soccer matches in history, is likely to be the most coveted piece in the collection. In that epic encounter, Messi not only scored twice but also played a pivotal role in the penalty shootout, securing Argentina’s victory with a 3-3 (4-2) triumph. This crowning moment adds unparalleled value to the jersey, making it a priceless artifact for soccer enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Memorabilia That Surpasses Legends

The bidding for Messi’s jerseys has already eclipsed winning bids for other iconic game-worn jerseys. Notable pieces, such as Kobe Bryant’s 2007-2008 MVP season jersey ($5.8m), Babe Ruth’s 1928-1930 New York Yankees jersey ($5.6m), and LeBron James’ 2013 NBA Finals Game 7 jersey ($3.6m), are now overshadowed by the allure of Messi’s historic collection. The potential to surpass the winning bids for Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey ($9.3m) and Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey ($10.1m) injects an extra layer of excitement into the auction.

Lionel Messi’s Global Recognition and Post-World Cup Achievements

Beyond the World Cup triumph, Messi’s global recognition soared as he received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player and the Silver Boot as the second-leading scorer. His impact extended beyond the international stage as he embarked on a new chapter with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, contributing to the club’s first trophy in the Leagues Cup. Messi’s continued excellence earned him his eighth Ballon d’Or, cementing his status as a football icon.

Anticipation Surrounding the Auction’s Conclusion

As the auction at Sotheby’s unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, curious to see if Messi’s jerseys will etch their names among the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold. The buzz surrounding this auction is a testament to the enduring legacy of Lionel Messi and the universal appreciation for his extraordinary contributions to the sport. With the auction set to conclude on December 14, the stage is set for a historic moment in the world of sports memorabilia.
