Why Last Samurai Standing Season 2 Was Inevitable

A blend of Squid Game and Shōgun, Last Samurai Standing is set in 1878 Japan, around a decade after the Boshin War. Enticed by an enormous cash prize, 292 samurai enlist in a competition called Kodoku — tasked with travelling from Kyoto to Tokyo while killing opponents to steal their wooden tags.

The numbers spoke for themselves. The show began by featuring in the daily top 10s in 93 countries. In its first week it picked up 6.2 million views and cleared most other Japanese live-action series released in recent years, with the exception of Alice in Borderland S3 and Yu Yu Hakusho.

In all, the series featured in the weekly top 10s for 4 weeks, amassing 94 million viewing hours, which equates to 18.3 million views. Netflix had no choice but to greenlight more.

What to Expect in Last Samurai Standing Season 2

The season 1 finale left Shujiro bloodied but standing — and a government summons waiting. Looking ahead to season 2, fans can expect the game of Kodoku to continue, as the participants fight to be part of the final 9 in Tokyo. But the game itself isn’t just for the sadistic pleasure of rich gamblers — it’s embedded in political intrigue, and more episodes will add even more context and explain further motivations.

But here’s the most exciting tease — Junichi Okada told The Hollywood Reporter: “For our show, for the first season, we don’t have superpowers, but if Last Samurai Standing is popular and well received, and if we were to continue to a second season, there may be a possibility that we might be introducing some of those aspects.”

Samurai with superpowers in Meiji Japan? Yes please. The show draws beautifully from the tradition of Japanese period action storytelling. To understand the historical backdrop of the Meiji era that fuels this drama, Wikipedia’s article on the Meiji period is a fascinating read.
