Lanterns Teaser Out: First Look at DC’s Green Lantern Series

The first official teaser trailer for DC Studios’ Lanterns has been released on March 5, 2026, unveiling the highly anticipated Green Lantern television series. The teaser, announced by director James Gunn on March 4 with the post “Their legacies continue. #Lanterns teaser tomorrow,” provides audiences their first major glimpse at the grounded detective-style narrative featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

Lanterns Series Production and Cast Details

The teaser showcases the contentious dynamic between veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The footage establishes their friction-heavy relationship, with Stewart challenging Jordan’s deliberate training approach while exploring the darker mysteries awaiting them. The series will premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max in August 2026.

Teaser Content and Narrative Focus

James Gunn’s DCU Strategy and Lanterns’ Significance

James Gunn, co-chair of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, positioned Lanterns as foundational to the unified DCU launching after Superman’s summer 2024 success. Gunn stated the series would be “something really special,” emphasizing the collaboration between prestige television creators Mundy, Lindelof, and King. The murder investigation conducted by Jordan and Stewart will serve as a springboard into broader DCU storylines.

The teaser announcement came via Gunn’s social media post featuring Green Lantern comic covers spanning generations, symbolizing the legacy both characters carry. The post’s composition with issues including Green Lantern #87 (John Stewart’s first appearance) and Geoff Johns’ iconic run suggests the series draws inspiration from these seminal comic narratives.

Teaser Reception and Fan Response

Initial fan reactions to the teaser have been mixed but generally positive. While some criticized the minimal superhero action and power displays, praising the grounded detective approach, others lauded the dynamic between Chandler and Pierre. The friction between veteran and newcomer establishes compelling interpersonal stakes beyond cosmic stakes. One particularly praised moment involved Stewart asking where other Green Lanterns are, with Jordan responding: “I’m the only human. They’re aliens. One of them is a f–king squirrel.”

The teaser’s emphasis on character development and murder mystery over spectacle aligns with Gunn’s stated vision of creating prestige HBO-quality television comparable to True Detective and Slow Horses.

Release Timeline and Production Journey

After multiple delays and redevelopment phases under Gunn and Safran’s leadership, Lanterns faced several release date adjustments. Initially expected for early 2026, it was later pushed to August 2026 following production complexities. The series filmed in Los Angeles from February through July 2025, completing principal photography relatively recently before teaser release.
