Lanterns Premiere: When and Where to Watch HBO’s Green Lantern Debut

The wait for DC’s grounded, detective-style superhero drama is almost over. Lanterns premieres on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 9:00 PM ET/PT on HBO, with episodes also streaming on HBO Max at the same time. Rather than leaning into cosmic battles, the show is framed as a grounded detective story from Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy, developed alongside Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King.

Who’s In It, and What’s the Story?

Kyle Chandler plays veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierre takes on John Stewart, a rookie just starting out. The two are pulled together when a murder in the American heartland spirals into something much larger.</cite> The story reportedly weaves between the present day and 2016, when a shooting incident in Rushville sets the mystery in motion, with themes of mentorship running through Jordan and Stewart’s partnership.

The supporting cast is stacked too — Laura Linney, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Nathan Fillion, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones all feature, and Nathan Fillion’s presence as Guy Gardner confirms the show shares continuity with the DCU film slate rather than existing as a standalone story.

Lanterns: Quick Facts

HBO announces release dates using U.S. time zones, so depending on where you live, new episodes may become available the following day.Reports point to a weekly Sunday schedule running from the August 16 premiere through an October 4 finale, though it’s worth noting that HBO itself hasn’t published a formally confirmed episode-by-episode calendar, so treat the exact weekly dates as expected rather than locked in.
