Walker’s Career Journey and Management

Walker made his England debut under Fabio Capello on November 12, 2011, against Spain at Wembley Stadium, replacing his current Burnley manager Scott Parker as a substitute. He went on to represent England under multiple managers including Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, Lee Carsley, and Thomas Tuchel.

The defender earned his sole international goal in a 1-1 draw with Ukraine in September 2023 and captained England once in a 1-1 draw with North Macedonia in November 2023. His final cap came just short of the 100-appearance milestone—a milestone he narrowly missed.

Walker’s Statement and Emotional Announcement

In his retirement announcement, Walker expressed mixed emotions: “I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England. To represent my country at five major tournaments, to get to the finals that we’ve reached and to be surrounded by this England team has been a great honour. Today is the time that comes to an end.”

He added: “To represent your country once, let alone 96 times, I’m extremely proud of that. It’s the memories. You don’t dream of playing for England, but to play for your country, there aren’t many people who get to do that.”

Club Career and Current Status

Walker enjoyed a glittering domestic career spanning Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and currently Burnley FC. During his Manchester City tenure, he won multiple trophies including six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He joined Burnley permanently in July 2025 following a loan spell at AC Milan. Currently, Burnley sit 19th in the Premier League table, nine points from safety with nine matches remaining.

England manager Thomas Tuchel paid tribute to Walker’s international career: “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career. Although I only worked with him for a short period of time, I was always aware that he was one of England’s greats who fully embraced the highest honour of representing his country. An international career spanning 14 years and five major tournaments is testament to Kyle’s dedication.”
