Kumar Sangakkara named as the new Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals, replacing Rahul Dravid for IPL 2026

Cricket has a beautiful way of bringing legends full circle. In the pink-walled fortress of Jaipur, where dreams are painted in royal colors, a familiar face is set to return to the dugout. Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan maestro whose batting was once poetry in motion, will once again guide the Rajasthan Royals as head coach for IPL 2026.

It’s a homecoming that feels both inevitable and inspired – the kind of appointment that makes perfect sense when you remember that the best stories in cricket are often about second chances and unfinished business.

The Coaching Carousel Comes Full Circle

Kumar Sangakkara will replace Rahul Dravid as head coach of the Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2026, marking a significant shift in the franchise’s leadership approach. Dravid parted ways as head coach after IPL 2025, having chosen not to take up a broader position at RR, creating an opportunity for the former Sri Lankan captain to return.

Why Sangakkara’s Return Makes Perfect Sense

The appointment isn’t just nostalgic – it’s strategic brilliance. RR currently have Kumar Sangakkara as director of cricket, alongside Vikram Rathour as batting coach and Shane Bond as bowling coach, meaning the transition will be seamless. The Sri Lankan legend understands the franchise’s DNA, having been instrumental in their 2022 runners-up campaign.

What makes this particularly intriguing is the timing. Rajasthan Royals have been searching for their championship formula since their fairy-tale triumph in 2008. Under Sangakkara’s previous guidance as director of cricket, they came tantalizingly close in 2022, losing the final to Gujarat Titans. That near-miss wasn’t failure – it was education.

The Mastermind Behind Modern RR

Sangakkara brings more than just tactical acumen; he brings the wisdom of someone who’s seen cricket from every angle. As a player, he was one of the most elegant batsmen of his generation. As a leader, he captained Sri Lanka with distinction. As a cricket intellectual, he’s proven his coaching credentials across various franchises and formats.

With Sanju Samson staying on as captain, this move ends speculation over leadership changes and strengthens RR’s title ambitions. The continuity between coach and captain will be crucial – Sangakkara understands Samson’s game, having worked closely with him during his previous stint.

The Challenge Ahead

The task isn’t small. The team hasn’t won the IPL title since their victory in the inaugural season in 2008, with their next-best finish being runners-up in 2022. But if anyone understands the pressure of delivering at the highest level, it’s Sangakkara. His return signals serious championship intent from the Royals management.

This isn’t just about tactics and team selection – it’s about creating a winning culture, something Sangakkara demonstrated during his playing career and has been building in his coaching roles.

The Perfect Reunion

Sometimes in cricket, the stars align perfectly. A franchise hungry for success, a coach with unfinished business, and a team with genuine potential – it’s a combination that promises fireworks in IPL 2026.
