Whispering Water — A Horror Film Built Around the Eyes

Whispering Water sends a production crew to a reservoir called Salmokji to reshoot road-view footage — after an unidentified figure was spotted in their original recording. What awaits them is a mysterious, terrifying presence lurking in the deep, dark water. Kim Hye Yoon plays Su In, the team leader who holds the crew together — and the character is a deliberate departure from her previous work.

“She doesn’t outwardly express her emotions,” Kim Hye Yoon explained. “She only wears neutral colors, and her facial expressions are almost always blank. Ultimately, I think the eyes were the most important part of portraying Su In.” It’s a fascinating creative challenge for an actress known for her expressive, emotionally vivid performances — restraint as a craft choice.

The “National Athlete” Analogy That Says Everything

Kim Hye Yoon’s philosophy of acting is one of the most refreshing things about this interview. When she was in college, she described herself in a self-introduction exercise as a “national athlete” — not in the sense of competing against others, but in the sense of constantly breaking her own personal records.

“By taking on new characters, I want to discover where my limits lie — and I want to break through them,” she said. It’s a mindset that explains her consistently bold, varied career choices perfectly.

She also revealed a habit that’s both charming and genuinely healthy: “When I’m alone, I compliment myself a lot.” She described how easy it is for actors to lose themselves in other characters, and how she intentionally listens to her own voice to stay grounded.
