47 Years in the Making — The Backstory

The two icons shared the screen together more than a dozen times during the late 1970s and early 1980s, appearing in Tamil classics including Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, 16 Vayathinile, and Ninaithale Inikkum — with their last full co-starring vehicle being the 1979 fantasy film Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum.

Now, nearly five decades later, Kamal Haasan himself put it best: “We’ve been itching to work together for a long time. Like how a biscuit was being split into two, we had then demanded that we each be given a whole biscuit each.” Wikipedia

When Does Filming Actually Begin?

Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan will wrap up their current commitments before joining the project — with the film expected to go on floors in 2027 and likely to release in late 2027 or even later. Manila Bulletin

Reports suggest Nelson Dilipkumar needs nearly a year to complete the script before cameras roll — a detail that only adds to the anticipation of what’s being crafted behind closed doors.

Both legends have packed pipelines first. Rajinikanth is lined up for Jailer 2 directed by Nelson, featuring SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, and Mithun Chakraborty, while Thalaivar173 is expected to begin shooting in April 2026. Starnews Korea Kamal Haasan, meanwhile, has KH237 and Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 to complete.

Why This Film Is Already Historic

The official promo — released on February 21, 2026, in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi — confirmed Nelson Dilipkumar as director and Anirudh Ravichander as composer, sending fans into a complete frenzy.

The poster featuring both stars in leather jackets with the tagline “Some men set rules, some men just rule” Wikipedia became one of the most shared images in Indian cinema history within hours of release.
