The Big OTT Plan: What’s Being Said

According to reports from Gulte, the Kalki 2 team is considering releasing one-hour-long character backstory films on OTT platforms ahead of the theatrical sequel. Each film would focus on a major character from the franchise, giving audiences deeper context before the sequel arrives.

To be clear — no official confirmation has come from the makers yet. But the idea alone has set the internet on fire, and honestly, it makes perfect sense given how layered this universe already is.

This kind of franchise storytelling mirrors what streaming platforms and cinematic universes have popularised globally — using connected OTT content to build hype and deepen world-building before a big theatrical release.

Where Does Kalki 2 Stand Right Now?

The sequel is currently in pre-production. Director Nag Ashwin has confirmed that full-scale shooting is set to begin around August–September 2026. There’s also swirling speculation that Alia Bhatt has joined the cast, with reports of a quiet shoot in Hyderabad last month — though Ashwin has asked fans to wait for an official announcement on casting.

Deepika Padukone, who played a pivotal role in the first film, has officially exited the franchise. Sai Pallavi is widely rumoured to step into that space.

A Quick Recap: The World of Kalki 2898 AD

The original Kalki 2898 AD is a rare beast — a sci-fi epic rooted in Hindu mythology. The story begins at the end of the Kurukshetra War (from the Mahabharata) and jumps 6,000 years forward to a dystopian 2898 AD, where a tyrant called Supreme Yaskin rules with an iron fist. The arrival of Kalki — the final avatar of Vishnu — is the universe’s last hope. The sequel is expected to answer what happens next.
