Only one round of matches remains in the Kalinga Super Cup 2024 Group Stage, and we are soon set to find out which teams make it to the semifinals. Only the group winners will make it to the last four, and the official tournament rules have laid out the criteria to determine which team takes precedence if they are on equal points.
The conditions become particularly relevant if we look at Group A and Group D – since both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, as well as Odisha FC and FC Goa are on six points ahead of their final group stage game. The winner of the high stakes matches will automatically qualify for the semifinal, but if it finishes in a draw, the tie-breaking conditions will come into play.
Kalinga Super Cup 2024: Tie breaking rules ahead of final matchday
If the two teams cannot be separated on points, the tie will be broken on the basis of a head to head record. But since neither of the two possible draws have faced each other, the head-to-head record doesn’t come into play.
As a result, the tie will have to be broken on the following conditions considering all the matches:
- Goal difference
- Number of goals scored
- Penalty kicks
- Drawing of lots
For the time being, East Bengal and FC Goa are at the top of their respective groups. The Red and Gold side have scored one more goal than Mohun Bagan SG, which gives them the edge in spite of having an equal goal difference.
On the other hand, FC Goa are at the top on goal difference, having a +2 advantage over Odisha FC.
