Juventus remain cautious about Paul Pogba injury fears

The widely celebrated Juventus return of Paul Pogba may have been dealt a massive blow, after the club revealed news of a potentially serious injury, having apparently torn the meniscus in his right knee. The French international was plagued by physical issues throughout his final season at Manchester United, before the departing on a free transfer once his contract expired.

Currently working through their pre-season training schedule in the United States, an official announcement from Juventus broke the news that none of their fans wanted to hear. Accompanying information about travel plans for the next few days, ahead of an eagerly anticipated friendly against Barcelona, the latest club press release highlighted growing concerns about the fitness of Paul Pogba.

“Following complaining of pain in his right knee, Paul Pogba underwent radiological examinations that revealed a lesion of the lateral meniscus. In the next few hours he will undergo a specialist orthopaedic consultation. Therefore, in order to continue treatment, he is not taking part in the trip to Dallas.”

Just one paragraph, yet in that statement Juventus cautiously indicated they will await further analysis, before possibly explaining the full extent of this injury suffered by Pogba. Should their worst fears be realised, without even kicking a ball in competitive action for Juventus, the 29-year-old could now be facing a lengthy period on the sidelines. Unfortunate, having arrived with such high spirits for the US Tour.

Indeed, should the aforementioned consultations reveal the injury is more severe, given reporters at the Daily Mail claim Pogba has torn the meniscus in his knee, the recovery time will depend entirely upon whether surgical intervention is required. Without the need for surgery, he can expect to be unavailable for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Should the treatment plan require an operation, the recovery time can be anywhere between 3 to 6 months.

This latest setback for Juventus could now spark a change of transfer plans at the club. According to various reports in the Italian media, they were previously said to be looking at offloading midfielders deemed surplus to requirements, once the free transfer signing of Pogba had been confirmed, little over a fortnight ago. They included any one or all three of Arthur, Aaron Ramsey, and Adrian Rabiot. Those plans may now need to be revised.

Regardless of this evident blow for Juventus, ahead of their Serie A opener on 15th August at home against Sassuolo, they remain amongst the leading candidates to win the title according to the latest odds. Inter Milan are tipped as the clear and early outright favourites, closely followed by Juventus, then reigning champions AC Milan, while Roma could also be regarded as being in the mix.

Nevertheless, international betting options can vary considerably depending on bookmakers in different countries, along with the odds formats they have available. For example, given the huge appeal surrounding football betting in Malaysia, their odds format might be somewhat complicated to understand. Thankfully, there’s a full guide to Malaysian odds available at SBO, which actually makes this betting system and format much easier to grasp.

Following on from the theme of gambling, whether you want to call it simple misfortune or perhaps even fate, Manchester United might have dodged a bullet when they failed to agree a contract extension with Paul Pogba. Negotiations dragged on for several months and the player was clearly unsettled, albeit at the same time demanding a huge increase in wages to stay at Old Trafford.

Likewise, he also missed a significant number of games during his last two seasons with the Red Devils, which undoubtedly influenced their decision to stand firm regarding their contract renewal offer. According to injury data for Pogba, he missed 13 games during the 2020-21 season, first with an ankle injury, then hamstring problems. During the 2021-22 season, he missed 15 games with a recurrence of the hamstring issues, then a calf injury.

Juventus will clearly be hoping the physical problems won’t be a recurring theme for Pogba, given the hefty wages and the predicted importance of his impact for the team. Despite having never lived up to the high expectations demanded of him at Manchester United, Pogba clearly enjoyed the best years of his career to date with Juventus, which means this latest injury setback will be just as frustrating for the player himself.
