Jos Buttler Resigns as England’s White-Ball Captain After CT Exit

Jos Buttler: England’s white-ball cricket has hit a major turning point as Jos Buttler announced his resignation as captain following the team’s early exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy. Buttler, who led England to their T20 World Cup victory in 2022, cited the team’s poor performances and the need for change as reasons for stepping down.

Buttler’s Decision to Resign

England’s disappointing campaign saw them lose to Australia and Afghanistan, sealing their elimination in the group stage. Following the defeats, Buttler admitted that it was time to “consider all possibilities” and reflect on his leadership role.

“It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team,” Buttler stated, confirming that the match against South Africa in Karachi would be his last as captain.

Despite stepping down from leadership, Buttler confirmed that he would continue playing for England, hoping to rediscover his passion for the game.

Declining Form and Scrutiny

Buttler’s captaincy came under increasing pressure after England’s poor performances in three consecutive ICC tournaments—the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and now the 2025 Champions Trophy. His own batting form has also been in decline, averaging 26.40 in his last 21 ODI innings, a significant drop from his career numbers.

Who Will Replace Buttler?

With Buttler stepping down, England will be looking for a new leader. Harry Brook, the current vice-captain, is a strong contender for the role, though head coach Brendon McCullum stated that no final decision has been made.

Tributes to Buttler’s Leadership

Despite the recent struggles, Buttler’s legacy as captain remains significant. He played a key role in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup triumph, and both McCullum and ECB officials praised his contributions.

“People forget that he literally won a World Cup only a couple of years ago, and that can never be taken away from him,” McCullum said.

England’s managing director, Rob Key, and ECB CEO Richard Gould also thanked Buttler for his service, calling him one of England’s all-time great white-ball cricketers.

What’s Next for England?

As England cricket enters a new phase, the focus now shifts to finding a new white-ball captain and rebuilding the squad. The team will aim to bounce back from recent setbacks and regain dominance in international cricket.

Would Harry Brook be the right successor, or will England look for a more experienced leader? Only time will tell.
