The buddy comedy genre has been quietly dying for years. Remember the last great one? Central Intelligence, back in 2016. Netflix’s new film Little Brother tries to resurrect that formula, pairing two comedy heavyweights who’ve never shared the screen before — John Cena and Eric Andre.

Does it work? Mostly yes, even if it doesn’t quite stick the landing.

What’s Little Brother Story About?

Rudd Landy (Cena) is a successful realtor about to land his big break — a spot on a fictional reality show called NYC Hustlers. The catch? His entire life has been spent in the shadow of his wealthy, condescending older brother Josh, played by Chris Meloni.

Just as Rudd’s spotlight moment arrives, his old “Big Brother” mentee Marcus (Andre) crashes back into his life. The two met back in 1998 through a mentorship program, and while Rudd barely remembers him, Marcus considers Rudd family. Naturally, chaos follows.

What Actually Works

The film’s biggest strength isn’t the jokes — it’s the heart underneath them. Eric Andre brings real warmth to Marcus, balancing his trademark chaotic energy with genuine tenderness, while Cena plays an effective straight man wrestling with unresolved brother trauma. Their chemistry feels surprisingly authentic.

Chris Meloni also gets a standout turn as the smug older brother, a fun change of pace for an actor more associated with serious crime dramas than comedy.

Where It Falls Short

The comedy itself is hit-or-miss. Several jokes land flat, and the pacing lacks the snap needed to make its bigger comedic set pieces work. It’s the kind of film that, released a decade earlier in a stronger era for the genre, might have been a genuine hit. Here, it settles into “decent background watch” territory instead.

Buddy comedies like this one borrow heavily from the structure of classic screwball comedy films — mismatched personalities forced together, chaos ensuing, real connection emerging by the end. Little Brother hits those beats reliably, even when the jokes themselves don’t always land.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re after non-stop laughs, this might disappoint. But if you want something with real warmth, a found-family arc, and two comedians clearly enjoying their dynamic, it’s worth the 90 minutes.

Final Take

Little Brother won’t replace the genre classics it’s clearly inspired by, but its sincerity and the unexpected Cena-Andre chemistry make it a solid, low-stakes watch — exactly the kind of comfort comedy Netflix does well.
