Jio’s 5 Gbps AirFiber Just Made Your Home Wi-Fi Feel Ancient

Reliance Jio isn’t just tweaking speeds — it’s rewriting what “home internet” means in India. At the company’s 49th AGM, Jio unveiled a Multi-Gigabit-ready AirFiber upgrade promising download speeds up to 5 Gbps and uploads up to 1 Gbps, a massive leap from the current 1 Gbps ceiling.

This isn’t a small nudge for casual browsing. It’s built for homes running multiple 4K streams, cloud gaming, video calls, and AI apps — all at once, without a single buffer wheel in sight.

What’s Changing in Jio?

The jump matters because upload speed has long been AirFiber’s weak spot. A guaranteed 1 Gbps upload finally puts it in serious contention for content creators, remote teams, and gamers who need fast two-way data, not just fast downloads.

Jio is also framing this as future-proofing — positioning the network for 8K entertainment, extended reality (XR), and AI-driven services that need serious bandwidth in both directions. Why It’s a Big Deal for India

India’s broadband story has always been about catching up to global speed benchmarks. A 5 Gbps consumer offering — if rolled out widely — would put Jio AirFiber ahead of most fiber plans currently sold in the country, wireless or wired.

Should You Wait for It?

If you’re due for an upgrade and don’t urgently need blazing uploads today, it may be worth holding off. Jio hasn’t confirmed pricing or a nationwide rollout date yet, so early adopters in select cities will likely see it first.
