Jio, the telecom giant backed by Reliance, appears to be gearing up to launch a new feature phone, as the device has recently received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Although the certification listing doesn’t reveal detailed specifications or a marketing name for the device, it does provide some key hints on the launch of a new variant in Jio’s popular feature phone series. The model number for the device is JFP1AE-DS, “DS” probably denoting a dual SIM configuration. This indicates the coming of a dual-SIM variant of JioPhone Prima 2, which is already available in the market.

JioPhone Secures BIS Certification in India: Could It Be the Prima 2 Dual SIM Version?

The JioPhone series is designed to be inexpensive feature phones that can access modern network types and are bundled with lots of necessary features, which means they are well-liked in the value-end of the market today.

If this new device is truly the JioPhone Prima 2 DS, it will likely share most of the specifications of the current Prima 2 model, but would then also support dual-SIM, letting users use two SIM cards in the same phone at the same time. This will help those who want to use Jio SIM along with other networks’ SIMs for improved coverage or cost control.

Earlier launched in collaboration with Qualcomm, the JioPhone Prima 2 comes with a 2.4-inch display, a Qualcomm quad-core processor, and 512MB of RAM, sufficiently powerful enough for a non-smart feature phone. It features microSD card slot expandable storage, for media and apps of up to 128GB. It runs KaiOS 2.5.3 software and comes with important apps such as YouTube, Facebook, JioSaavn, JioCinema, JioTV, etc., and also supports Google Assistant.

Beginning at a cost of ₹2,799, the JioPhone Prima 2 offers a lot of bang for the buck. If the S908D dual-SIM version of this model comes out, we expect it will come out at a marginally higher price, but still be a good price for a broad range of users.
