What Did Karthik Subbaraj Actually Say?
Speaking to News18, the filmmaker was refreshingly direct. He confirmed he has a story idea already forming in his head, and while it won’t be his immediate next project, the third instalment will be made someday. His next film, he revealed, will be a smaller indie project set in Madurai — with an entirely fresh cast of debut actors. So Jigarthanda 3 fans will need a little patience, but the promise is real.
Recapping the Franchise So Far
The Jigarthanda universe is one of Tamil cinema’s most creative achievements. The original 2014 film — starring Siddharth and the National Award-winning Bobby Simha — follows a filmmaker who goes undercover to research a brutal gangster named Assault Sethu, only for chaos to erupt when the truth surfaces. It was inspired by the 2006 South Korean film A Dirty Carnival and became an instant classic.
Karthik then returned in 2023 with Jigarthanda DoubleX, a prequel set in the 1970s. Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah delivered career-best performances as an ex-convict who poses as a filmmaker to infiltrate a gangster’s world — a layered, cinematic masterpiece that earned widespread acclaim. It’s currently streaming on Netflix and is essential viewing if you haven’t seen it yet. For more on Tamil cinema’s biggest franchise updates, keep an eye on TechnoSports.
What Else Is Karthik Subbaraj Working On?
The director is clearly a man with ideas overflowing. Beyond Jigarthanda 3, he also has a Mahaan 2 (starring Chiyaan Vikram and Dhruv Vikram) quietly brewing in his mind. His most recent release was Retro, starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde — a romantic action thriller about a youngster weaponised by his ruthless stepfather who must ultimately choose between his violent past and love.
