Fans love a good casting theory, and this one spread fast. But James Gunn has now stepped in with a one-word reply. If you’re tracking the DCU on Technosports, here’s what’s confirmed and what’s still a guess.

How the Rumor Started ?

A fan account claimed Matthew Lillard’s Man of Tomorrow character would have a biracial family and share scenes with Daily Planet staff like Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and Perry White. Since Iris West has often been portrayed as a person of color in other adaptations, fans guessed Lillard might be Barry Allen, the next Flash after Ezra Miller.

James Gunn ‘s Answer

When a fan asked directly on Threads, Gunn replied with a firm “No.” Barry Allen is officially not among Lillard’s possible roles. The DCU has already confirmed the Flash exists in this universe, and Gunn said in 2025 that Flash and Aquaman wouldn’t appear within two years. The setup is underway, though, thanks to Gorilla Grodd’s arrival in HBO Max’s People vs. Gorilla Grodd.

Who Could Lillard Play Instead?

TheoryWho they areWhy it fits
Ted KordThe original Blue BeetleBlue Beetle established Jenny Kord as biracial; he could mentor Jaime Reyes
Jack RyderGotham reporter and The CreeperA journalist would fit the Daily Planet scenes and could set up The Brave and the Bold

All three are speculation, and Lillard’s actual role remains under wraps.

The Fun Connection

Lillard’s casting reunites him with Gunn, who wrote the live-action Scooby-Doo movies where Lillard played Shaggy. He also recently appeared in Daredevil: Born Again as Mr. Charles, making him the eighth Marvel actor to join the DCU. Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027.
