IPL Impact Player Rule: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season is just around the corner, and fans are eagerly waiting for the new innovations that the league will introduce. One of the major changes from last season is the Impact Player rule. The rule is designed to add a new tactical or strategic dimension to the game and give more opportunities to Indian players, especially the talented, uncapped ones who don’t find a place in the starting XI.

What is the Impact Player rule?

Each team will submit four substitutes apart from the Playing XI, after the toss. Out of these four players, one can be used as an Impact Player during the course of the match. The Impact Player can replace any player in the playing XI but only after the 14th over of an innings. The captain or head coach needs to inform the on-field or fourth umpire about the introduction of the Impact Player. A batting team can introduce the Impact Player at the fall of the wicket or during the innings break.

It is also important to note that if the Impact Player is a bowler, he can bowl the full quota of four overs. But in any situation, only 11 players can bat. The player from the playing 11 who has been substituted can no longer take part in the game.

When can the Impact Player rule be used?

The Impact Player rule can be used in a full-length match, and it can also be used in a shortened game in the league. However, the rule will not come into effect if the match is less than 10 overs per side.

The Impact Player can only be an Indian player unless the franchise has fewer than four overseas players in the Playing XI. The motive of this rule is to provide more opportunities to Indian players, especially the talented, uncapped ones who don’t find a place in the starting XI.

The rule will allow teams to have both deeper batting and bowling line-ups, and teams with a strong overseas bench could start with three overseas players and use the fourth as per requirement.

However, the tactical potential of the Impact Player rule was further reduced when franchises were told, less than a month before the start of IPL 2023, that they could finalize their XIs after the toss. So for this season, the captains can take two separate team sheets to the toss – one for if they are batting first, and another for if they are bowling first. This change reduces the need for two-dimensional players and almost “negates” the role of the allrounder unless he was “flexible” enough to play in multiple positions.
