Apple is reportedly planning significant upgrades for the iPhone 17 base model, bringing premium features traditionally reserved for Pro models to the entry-level device. The most notable change is a larger 6.3-inch display, matching the iPhone 17 Pro’s screen size.

iPhone 17 Lineup Display Comparison

Model	Display Size	Refresh Rate	Panel Type	Notable Features
iPhone 17	6.3″	120Hz	LTPS	Same size as Pro
iPhone 17 Pro	6.3″	120Hz	LTPO	Variable refresh rate
iPhone 17 Air	6.6″	120Hz	LTPS	Ultra-thin design
iPhone 17 Pro Max	6.9″	120Hz	LTPO	Largest iPhone ever

According to display analyst Ross Young and leaker Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 17 base model will finally receive the 120Hz treatment that users have been requesting for years.

Key iPhone 17 Base Model Upgrades

Display Enhancement: The jump from 6.1″ to 6.3″ brings the base model in line with the Pro variant, offering more screen real estate without the premium price tag.

120Hz Refresh Rate: While the base model gets 120Hz, it uses LTPS technology instead of LTPO, meaning the refresh rate stays constant rather than adapting dynamically to save battery.

Camera Improvements: The front-facing camera doubles in resolution from 12MP to 24MP, promising better selfies and video calls.

Performance & Memory: The A18 chip provides enhanced performance, while 8GB RAM matches Pro models for the first time.

What This Means for Consumers

These upgrades represent Apple’s most significant base model enhancement in years:

Better Value Proposition: More premium features at the entry-level price point
AI-Ready Hardware: 8GB RAM ensures compatibility with advanced Apple Intelligence features
Display Parity: Same screen size as Pro model eliminates a major differentiation factor
Future-Proofing: Higher specifications extend the device’s usable lifespan

The 8GB RAM upgrade is particularly significant, as it enables complex on-device AI processing that Apple is prioritizing for future iOS updates.

The Catch: Non-LTPO Panel

While gaining 120Hz is exciting, the base model’s LTPS panel lacks the variable refresh rate capabilities of Pro models’ LTPO technology. This means:

Battery Impact: Constant 120Hz may reduce battery life compared to adaptive refresh rates
No Always-On Display: LTPS panels typically don’t support always-on functionality
Pro Model Distinction: Apple maintains technical differentiation for premium tiers

Launch Timeline and Expectations

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025, potentially alongside AirPods Pro 3. The base model upgrades suggest Apple is responding to competitive pressure from Android manufacturers offering high-refresh displays across all price tiers.
