iPhone 16: The Best Ways to Use the Action Button

With the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple has expanded the Action Button to all models, no longer limiting it to just the Pro versions. In addition, you also have a new Camera Control button which is going to come in handy and will now no longer require the use of an Action Button for snapping an open camera, something that was quite common before this update.

As an additional bonus for iOS users, version 18 has also brought new Control Center options to further customize the Action Button. In this article, you will learn what the Action Button on your iPhone 16 running iOS 18 is for, as well as a range of capabilities that can enrich its use cases.

The Uses of Action Button on iPhone 16

A few core features of the Action Button in legacy versions have actually survived. Silent Mode remains an option, letting you toggle sound settings and replace the older mute switch. This feature is particularly useful for those who frequently switch between sound modes, though less essential for those who keep their phones in silent mode permanently. Another function that can be assigned is controlling Focus Modes. The Action Button can toggle any Focus mode you’ve set up, like Do Not Disturb. It’s convenient for users who switch between modes often, though automation options also exist.

One thing that can’t be changed is the Camera option assigned to the Action Button, but with the new Camera Control button there it may no longer matter unless you’re replacing presets for launching the selfie camera and other specific actions. The Flashlight, which is another utility setting, may now be displayed on the Action Button in conclusion after it is turned on and accessible more effortlessly with iOS 18’s extended Lock Screen customization.

Another great feature would be Voice Memos. You hit the Action Button and it records, then immediately stops when you press that button again. Since Voice Memos will soon support transcription in iOS 18, this feature may become more powerful, especially for students and professionals who tend to record meetings, lectures, or interviews with another person. For music lovers, the Action Button can activate Shazam, making it easy to identify songs playing around you.

Apple has made the Action Button even more versatile by allowing it to trigger any Shortcut created through the Shortcuts app. This opens up nearly unlimited customization options, including controlling third-party apps. Additionally, new Control Center functions and third-party integrations introduced in iOS 18 can also be assigned to the Action Button. Whether you’re looking to simplify daily tasks or streamline your workflow, the Action Button provides a customizable, one-touch solution to enhance your iPhone 16 experience.
