Intel Panther Lake Nearly Matches Apple M5 in Battery Test

Intel‘s comeback story just got a lot more interesting. The new Panther Lake (Core Ultra Series 3) chip, built on Intel’s 18A process, has come jaw-droppingly close to matching Apple’s M5 in a real-world battery endurance test — and the Windows world is buzzing.

Panther Lake vs Apple M5: Battery Test Results

A hands-on test by tech reviewer Vadim Yuryev pitted the Asus 14-inch ExpertBook Ultra (Panther Lake) against the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5) — both running at max 600 nits brightness for 2.5 hours of continuous heavy benchmarking.

Just a 2% gap. That’s not a typo.

For context, Intel laptops were notorious for draining fast. PCWorld’s review of the Asus Zenbook Duo found up to 22–28 hours of real-world battery on a single screen — a first for Windows laptops at this performance level.

Why This Is a Big Deal

Apple’s M-series chips have been the gold standard in power efficiency since the M1 in 2020. For Intel — running the x86 architecture, which has historically consumed more power — to nearly match ARM-based Apple silicon is genuinely remarkable.

According to Tom’s Guide, Intel has essentially made an x86 chip behave like an ARM chip, without sacrificing Windows app compatibility. That’s a tradeoff Apple can’t offer.

Also worth noting: Panther Lake leads in integrated GPU gaming performance — the Xe3 GPU scored 5,883 vs the M5’s 5,077 in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light — making these laptops surprisingly capable for light gaming.

Should You Buy a Panther Lake Laptop?

If you need Windows compatibility + near-MacBook battery life + gaming chops, Panther Lake is your best bet yet. Apple still edges ahead in single-core performance and raw efficiency, but the gap has never been smaller.
