Instagram Map Feature Launches in India with Privacy Tools

Instagram has rolled out its Map feature in India, enabling users to share their last active location with friends and explore location-tagged content. Following its global launch in August, the India rollout includes several privacy improvements and clearer location-sharing controls.

The Map feature lets users opt-in to share their last active location with selected friends or groups. Sharing preferences are fully customizable—users can:

• Select specific people to share location with
• Disable sharing in certain areas for privacy
• Turn off location sharing entirely at any time

For supervised teen accounts, parents receive notifications when location sharing is enabled and can manage related permissions, adding an extra safety layer.

Content Discovery

Beyond location sharing, users can explore location-tagged Reels, Stories, Notes, and Posts from friends and creators. All content shared on the Map remains visible for 24 hours and can be accessed through the DM inbox icon.

This creates a new way to discover what’s happening in specific locations and connect with friends’ experiences in real-time.

Privacy Improvements for India Launch

Instagram has introduced several refinements since the global rollout to reduce confusion and improve transparency:

• Persistent Indicator: A clear indicator at the top of the map shows whether location sharing is active or disabled on the device.
• Profile Indicators: A secondary indicator under profile photos in the Notes tray clarifies when users aren’t sharing their location.
• Profile Photo Removal: Profile photos no longer appear over tagged content to prevent assumptions about live locations.
• Educational Reminders: Users see explanations that adding location tags to stories, reels, or posts places them on the Map.
• Preview Option: Before publishing, users can preview how their tagged content will appear on the Map, improving transparency.
