Inside the Circle Netflix Review: A Fast-Paced Mexican Political Thriller That Loses Its Way in a Web of Twists

A murdered actress, a leaked video and a powerful Defense Secretary caught in the middle. Netflix’s new eight-episode Mexican series has all the ingredients of a binge-worthy thriller. The question is whether it knows what to do with them.

Inside the Circle: Overview

The Setup

When actress Pamela Dosantos is found murdered, the national media erupts. Then journalist Tomás (Michel Brown) obtains a video that changes everything. It shows her entering the home of the new, powerful Defense Secretary Salazar, and suddenly a murder case becomes a political scandal.

Tomás’s life is soon in danger, and his editor at the newspaper El Mundo doubts he can crack the story. Luckily, he has the “Circle” of the title: three lifelong friends who are businessman Jaime, teacher Mario and politician Amelia. Meanwhile, Mario’s daughter Viridiana takes her own interest in the case, with some of her friends dabbling in hacking.

What Works?

The action. When the series hits its stride, it is explosive. The shootouts and chases are tense and propulsive, comparable to some of the best thrillers on streaming. The pace stays brisk, and the reviewer credits it with a good handle on action scenes.

The friendship at the core. The murder is not really the main point. The story is about a bond tested in life-or-death situations. Flashbacks, set to classic songs, show how the four friends grew up and why they stayed close even after following very different careers in journalism, politics and education.

Amelia’s storyline. Zuria Vega’s character gets one of the most interesting arcs. She breaks from her party’s line on security, fights to keep her position and struggles with anxiety attacks.

What Doesn’t?

Here is where the web gets tangled. The show cannot decide whether it wants to be a character drama about friendship or a mystery about who killed Pamela, and it suffers for trying to be both. The more risks the friends take, the less we care why they are taking them.

Some characters also stumble. Mario, a high school teacher dragged into dangerous missions, feels far-fetched. Amelia, as the only woman in the group, sometimes falls back on easy tropes in her dynamic with the others. The subplot with Viridiana and her teen friends takes screen time but adds little.

As more conspiracies and over-the-top witnesses pile up, interest gradually fades. None of the leads is unlikeable, but few will be remembered at the end of the year.

Conclusion

Inside the Circle delivers on thrills but not on depth. Its character drama is a little lightweight and on-the-nose, which shows how hard it is to turn a page-turning novel into a great series. Watch it if you enjoy fast, twisty political thrillers and don’t need rich characters. If you like it, the reviewer suggests The Marked Woman and O Mecanismo as follow-ups.
