A recent survey by Airbnb(https://www.airbnb.co.in/) indicates that a significant majority of Gen Z and Millennials in India are increasingly opting for travel experiences that include multiple generations of their families. The findings highlight a shift towards holidays centered on collective experiences and strengthening familial connections.
The survey, which polled 2,012 urban Indian respondents aged 18–45, revealed that 75% of Gen Z and Millennial individuals are more inclined to travel with family members spanning different generations. Key motivations cited for this preference include creating shared memories (55%) and strengthening family bonds (51%).
Airbnb : Demand for Larger Group Stays Rises
This evolving travel preference is reflected in booking patterns. Internal data from Airbnb shows an over 55% year-on-year increase in domestic searches for stays accommodating groups of five or more guests, including at least one child or infant. This trend underscores a growing interest in larger family getaways.

Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Airbnb’s Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, noted, “Family holidays have always been an important part of how Indians travel. What we’re seeing now is a growing interest among younger generations in bringing different generations together, with travel becoming an opportunity to reconnect, create new memories and spend meaningful time with one another.”
Gen Z Leads the Shift
Gen Z travelers appear to be a primary driver of this trend. Seventy percent of Gen Z respondents stated they are more likely to undertake intergenerational travel now compared to a few years ago. Domestic group bookings made by Indian Gen Z travelers have also seen an increase of nearly 55% year-on-year. When planning such trips, approximately 50% of Gen Z travelers prefer whole homes, villas, or apartments, indicating a desire for shared spaces for family gatherings.
Beyond the destination, the accommodation itself is becoming an integral part of the intergenerational travel experience. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents indicated they most enjoy relaxing and spending time together at their chosen accommodation, surpassing sightseeing and exploration (56%). Preferred activities within these shared spaces include sharing meals (57%), playing games (45%), and watching films or shows together (39%). Among those preferring whole-home stays, 89% consider a shared space for collective activities important, with common living areas (58%), sufficient bedrooms (56%), and multiple bathrooms (55%) being prioritized features.
Preferred Destinations and Domestic Focus
When selecting destinations, 59% of respondents prioritize locations that appeal to all family members. Nature-led destinations such as mountains, countryside, or natural retreats were the most popular choice (56%), followed by beach and coastal getaways (47%), and heritage or spiritual sites (44%).
Domestic travel continues to dominate this segment, accounting for over 80% of searches on Airbnb among India-origin groups of five or more. Popular domestic destinations for larger groups include Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, The Nilgiris, and Pondicherry. These trends align with broader industry developments(https://technosports.co.in/) in the Indian travel sector.
The insights from the Intergenerational Travel Insights 2026 survey were based on an online poll conducted by YouGov between September 28 and October 7, 2026. The sample consisted of 2,012 urban Indian respondents from NCCS A households across ten major cities. Airbnb’s internal data on search activity covers the period from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, compared to the corresponding previous year.
