A recent study by global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky (https://www.kaspersky.com/) indicates that Generation Z is the most active demographic engaging with artificial intelligence across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. The research highlights a significant trend of young users integrating AI into their daily routines, often treating these tools as conversational partners, yet frequently neglecting crucial safety measures.

According to Kaspersky’s findings, half (50%) of Gen Z respondents in APAC use AI daily or almost every day, making them the most frequent users among all demographic groups surveyed. This cohort primarily utilizes AI for information searching (57%), academic pursuits (54%), and idea generation (50%).

AI as a Confidant: A Growing Trend

Beyond practical applications, the study reveals a notable shift in how Gen Z interacts with AI. Nearly one-third (32%) of APAC Gen Z respondents report using AI as a friend. This behavior is consistent across various countries, including Indonesia (39%), Vietnam (35%), Thailand (34%), Malaysia (33%), and India (32%). This suggests an evolving role for AI, moving beyond a utility tool to potentially a source of companionship or emotional support for some users.

Gen Z

The personal nature of these interactions extends to discussing sensitive topics. In the APAC region, 34% of Gen Z respondents stated they use AI to discuss personal issues they prefer not to share with others. Vietnam recorded the highest percentage at 42%, followed by India (37%) and Indonesia (36%). While offering a sense of privacy and support, Kaspersky cautions that AI is not a human confidant and its responses can be inaccurate or inappropriate, potentially leading users to disclose sensitive information without adequate safeguards.

Safety Lapses Amidst High Confidence

Despite their high level of digital activity and confidence in using AI, a significant portion of Gen Z appears to underestimate associated risks. The research indicates that while 45% of Gen Z respondents in APAC consistently take protective measures, more than half (51%) apply precautions only occasionally. This inconsistency is particularly pronounced in Malaysia (54%) and China (60%), while Indonesia recorded the lowest proportion at 43%.

Protective measures, such as verifying AI-generated information against reliable sources and avoiding the disclosure of confidential data, are often overlooked. As AI becomes more integrated into education, communication, and personal decision-making, the potential consequences of inaccurate information or shared sensitive data become more severe.

Vladislav Tushkanov, Group Manager at Kaspersky AI Technology Research Centre, commented on the findings, stating, “Gen Z understands emerging AI trends better than other generations and is already finding new ways to integrate the technology into studying, communication, and everyday life. The fact that some young people now use AI as a friend shows how quickly the relationship between users and technology is changing.” He added, “However, an interaction that feels personal should not be mistaken for a private or fully reliable conversation. Young users need to combine their confidence and curiosity with habits such as checking information, protecting personal data, and thinking critically about the responses they receive.”

Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, reiterated the importance of safe practices. “When one in three Gen Z users in APAC already sees AI as a friend, it is clearly becoming more than just a tool. As that relationship becomes more personal, knowing what to trust, what to share, and where to draw the line will be key to using AI safely and responsibly,” Hia stated.

Kaspersky advises users to verify critical information, especially for sensitive topics, and refrain from sharing passwords, payment details, or private correspondence with AI services. Understanding a platform’s data collection and storage policies is also crucial before engagement. The study, conducted by Kaspersky’s market research center in March 2026, surveyed 7,200 respondents across 18 countries.
