India vs Afghanistan 2026: The IPL 2026 season isn’t even over yet, and Indian cricket’s next chapter is already being written. On May 19, 2026, the BCCI’s selection committee — led by Ajit Agarkar — announced India’s squads for their upcoming home series against Afghanistan, and the selections sent shockwaves through the cricket world. Senior heads have been rested, a vice-captaincy has changed hands, and four fresh faces have earned the dream call-up to represent India.

This isn’t just a squad announcement. It’s a blueprint for what Indian cricket wants to become before the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The Biggest Talking Points

Pant Loses Vice-Captaincy — KL Rahul Steps Up

KL Rahul has replaced Rishabh Pant as the Test vice-captain, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarifying that Pant remains a vital part of India’s Test setup — this was simply a decision based on Rahul’s greater captaincy experience across formats. “That’s the best option we think at this point that we have as far as vice-captain with experience,” Agarkar said.

Pant has also been left out of the ODI squad entirely — with Ishan Kishan preferred as the second wicketkeeper option. Agarkar said the selectors want Pant to “become the best Test player that he has always been.” A gentle but firm message about where the selectors see his future.

Bumrah & Jadeja Rested — Workload Management in Full Effect

Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested from the one-off Test as part of workload management — Jadeja had also picked up a niggle towards the end of IPL 2026, while Axar Patel and Akash Deep are also absent from both squads. Agarkar confirmed Bumrah will be back for India’s tour of England in July. Given the concerns we highlighted in our India T20 World Cup squad fatigue analysis on TechnoSports, this is exactly the right call.

The Exciting Debutants — India’s Next Generation

Among the biggest talking points is the maiden Test selection for 23-year-old Manav Suthar, 25-year-old Gurnoor Brar, and 23-year-old Harsh Dubey.

Manav Suthar is a left-handed batting, slow left-arm orthodox all-rounder from Rajasthan who has been a regular fixture for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Gurnoor Brar — his Gujarat Titans teammate — is a right-arm fast bowler representing Punjab in domestic cricket, known for generating bounce and movement with the new ball.

Brar has played only 18 first-class games and nine List A matches but took 11 wickets in eight games during Punjab’s run to the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-finals, and was also the joint-highest wicket-taker in India A’s matches against Australia A in September 2025. Chief selector Agarkar specifically highlighted his height as a factor, with an eye on South Africa conditions for the 2027 World Cup.

In the ODI squad, Prince Yadav earns his maiden call-up alongside Brar and Harsh Dubey — four fresh faces across both formats, giving India’s pipeline real depth ahead of a massive international calendar.

Rohit & Hardik — The Fitness Watch Continues

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were both picked in the ODI squad subject to fitness clearance — Rohit missed five IPL 2026 matches with a hamstring issue, while Pandya sat out four matches with back spasms. Agarkar said he’d been told by physios that both players were “on track” for the ODI series beginning June 14.

India are resting their battle-hardened stars and handing tomorrow’s heroes their first taste of international cricket. The Afghanistan series isn’t just about winning — it’s about finding the next Bumrah, the next Jadeja, the next match-winner. And from this squad, at least a few of them might just announce themselves to the world.
