India Strikes Gold… Almost: Lovlina’s Bronze Lights Up Glasgow Day 2

Day two of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow delivered exactly what fans were waiting for — India’s first confirmed medal. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured bronze in the women’s 75kg category without even throwing a punch, after a bye sent her straight into the semifinals, where Commonwealth rules guarantee bronze to every losing semifinalist. It’s an early psychological boost for a 125-member Indian contingent chasing medals across 13 sports in a Games that, notably, has no badminton, wrestling, or hockey on the men’s side to lean on this time.

What’s Unfolding Today

Beyond boxing, India’s day is packed. Srihari Nataraj headlines the swimming challenge in the men’s 50m backstroke, having advanced into the semifinals after finishing fifth in his heat. Para swimmers Ravi Budigina and Imam Ali also progressed to their 100m freestyle S13 final. In artistic gymnastics, Tapan Mohanty, Swathish KP, Tapeshwarnath Das, and Yogeshwar Singh are competing in the men’s team final, while powerlifter Kasthuri Rajamani looks to add to the medal tally in the women’s heavyweight category. Lawn bowls continues to be a bright spot too, with Putul Sonowal building on his stunning opening-day upset over reigning world champion Ryan Bester.

Why It Matters

With traditional medal-heavy sports like badminton and wrestling missing from the program, India’s path to the podium is more spread out this year — resting heavily on gymnastics, powerlifting, para-sports, and lawn bowls early on, before athletics and weightlifting take centre stage later in the Games.
