Every campaign has to end somewhere, and India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 journey wrapped up on a bittersweet note — no medals on the final day, but a tally strong enough to secure a place among the tournament’s top nations.

Commonwealth Games 2026: Final Day

The Commonwealth Games 2026 concluded on Sunday, and it was a disappointing final day for the Indian contingent as they suffered defeats across both judo and cycling, denying them a 40th medal. India did not win any medals on Day 10 (August 2).

Judo Heartbreak

Ishroop Narang kept India’s hopes flickering with a gutsy run in the women’s 78kg judo, beating Nicole Wood of Scotland in the Round of 16 before running into Emma Reid of England in the quarter-finals, where a Waza-ari followed by a pin sealed an Ippon defeat. Narang fought back through the repechage, beating Cameroon’s Georgika Wesly Djengue Moune, setting up a bronze medal bout against Canada’s Coralie Godbout — but she came up short there too, going down by Yuko and finishing the event empty-handed.

Elsewhere on the mat, Avtar Singh and Yash Ghanghas both bowed out early in the men’s heavyweight categories, losing to Cyprus’s Aristos Michael and Wales’s Joshua Whitehouse respectively.

Cycling Didn’t Deliver Either

Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam clocked 1:04.191 to finish 10th in the men’s 1000m time trial, while Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon both crashed out of qualifying for the 40km points race. The last realistic shot at a medal came from 16-year-old para cyclist Lisha Das, the youngest athlete in India’s squad, who rode a solid 1:34.410 in the C4-C5 1000m time trial final but had to settle for sixth.

A Strong Overall Campaign

Despite the quiet finish, the bigger picture remains impressive. Finishing with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze — at a competition with a noticeably slimmed-down sports programme is no small feat, and India will finish comfortably in the top five of the medal table, well clear of other Asian nations.

Eyes On Ahmedabad 2030

With Ahmedabad set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, this campaign gives India both promise and motivation for the next home edition. A home Games, potentially with a fuller sporting programme and the depth India is now building across disciplines, could help the nation visualise breaching the triple-digit medal mark on home soil. India’s growing strength across multiple disciplines reflects a broader shift within the Commonwealth Games as competing nations invest more heavily in athlete development.
