The Indian Government is reconsidering banning Chinese smartphones under Rs.12,000

A recent report hinted that the Indian Government is looking to ban smartphones produced by Chinese brands that retail under Rs.12,000 in the market but that may no longer be the case as the latest report hints that the Centre is rethinking its decision on this subject.

India will face a lot of difficulty in enforcing a smartphone ban of this nature:

The previous report had spoken about the government officials stating that such a move to ban the cheaper smartphones from China was done so that Indian brands could get a shot in the arm and be able to make a comeback once again.

Chinese OEMs are the most popular smartphones and devices under Rs.12,000 are a hot segment in the market. As per sources, the government has no immediate plans for imposing such a ban as of now.

This report goes on to add that if such a band does go into effect, the enforcement of it will be an extremely challenging task. Three out of every ten smartphones sold belong to the under Rs.12,000 segment. In this segment, over 78 percent of all devices sold are made by Chinese brands. Indian brands have virtually no market share in this segment.

Brands such as Apple and Samsung will not be impacted as much by this ban as although they have over 20 percent of market share, their top-selling smartphones are in the mid-range and premier category. Just under 1 percent of smartphones sold in the country belong to Micromax, Lava, and Karbonn which is extremely disappointing.
