It should have been a week of celebration. India were heading to London for a FIFA-recognised international tournament — the Unity Cup 2026 — flying into Charlton Athletic’s historic Valley ground to face Jamaica, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe on a proper world stage.

Instead, coach Khalid Jamil is heading into his biggest assignment yet with one hand tied firmly behind his back.

FIFA Tier 1 — Why This Matters

FIFA has officially granted the Unity Cup 2026 full Tier 1 international tournament status — meaning every match will now count as a full international game under FIFA regulations and directly impact each nation’s FIFA World Rankings.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the development, stating: “This year’s Unity Cup will feature four international teams — Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe — competing across two semi-finals and a finals day between May 26-30 at Charlton Athletic’s historic home ground.”

For India — ranked 136th in the world — every FIFA ranking point matters enormously as they inch toward the 2027 Asian Cup and the long-term dream of a FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Real points, on a real stage, against real opposition.

There is, however, one important caveat. Despite the Tier 1 status, appearances in the Unity Cup will not count as official international caps because the tournament falls outside the FIFA international window, which officially starts June 1 — meaning clubs are not obligated to release players, which directly explains what happened next.

The Mohun Bagan Walkout — Seven Stars Gone

Seven Mohun Bagan Super Giant players — Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Lalengmawia Ralte, Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa, Abhishek Singh and Vishal Kaith — withdrew from the national camp despite initially reporting to it.

The club reportedly cited concerns over injury liability outside the protected FIFA window, referencing previous cases involving Ashique Kuruniyan and Subhasish Bose where rehabilitation costs allegedly fell on the club rather than the AIFF. No compensation agreement was reached before departure — and seven of India’s most important players flew home instead of to London.

It’s a gut-punch for Indian football, and a governance problem the All India Football Federation must address urgently. Ironically, six of those very players — including Liston Colaco and Edmund Lalrindika — were heroes just days ago as their clubs competed in the ISL 2025-26 final. India’s 19-Man Squad — The Brave Ones Heading to London

With defender Anwar Ali also ruled out through injury and fresh replacements impossible due to visa timelines, India travel to London with just 19 available players — including goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, the Golden Glove winner with FC Goa, who may need to travel separately.

Despite the chaos, names like Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Sandesh Jhingan, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Farukh Choudhary, and Edmund Lalrindika still give India a competitive nucleus. They are massive underdogs against Jamaica (ranked 71st) — but Indian football has surprised the world before.

India have a genuine FIFA Tier 1 stage in London and a genuine crisis in their squad. Khalid Jamil walks into The Valley depleted, battle-hardened, and with everything to prove. That’s exactly the kind of story Indian football needs to tell.
