India were on course for something extraordinary. A blistering opening stand, a Samson masterclass, a Kishan fifty off 23 balls — and then, in the blink of an eye, Jimmy Neesham took 3 wickets in a single over to drag New Zealand right back into the T20 World Cup 2026 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

The Samson Show — And Another Heartbreak at 89
Nobody in Indian cricket right now is playing with the kind of fearless freedom that Sanju Samson brings. He hammered three consecutive sixes off Rachin Ravindra in one over, reaching 88* before drinks. The crowd was on its feet anticipating a World Cup final century.
It never came. A thigh-high full toss from Neesham, cramped for room, and Samson miscued to long-on for 89 — caught by McConchie. It’s the second time this tournament Samson has fallen in the 80s chasing three figures. The heartbreak is real, but what an innings it was.
Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, was the quieter destroyer alongside him — a 23-ball fifty with four sixes, completely overshadowed by Samson’s pyrotechnics but equally devastating.
Neesham’s Over — The Moment That Changed Everything
India were cruising at 203/1 when James Neesham turned the final on its head. Kishan went first — mistiming a low full toss to long-on. Then, on his very first ball, Suryakumar Yadav attempted a flick over fine leg, only for Rachin Ravindra to take a sharp catch at the boundary. Three wickets. One over. 203/1 became 204/4 instantly.
Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma then struggled badly, going 16 balls without a boundary before Pandya hit a six — and then holed out to Santner off the very next delivery. India went from a potential 270+ to something around 240-245.
