Breaking Down the ‘In the Hand of Dante’ Trailer

The newly released In the Hand of Dante trailer sets the stage for a mesmerizing and unconventional thriller. Visually stunning, the footage shifts seamlessly between two distinct timelines: a gritty, modern-day New York and a vibrant, Renaissance-era Italy. At the center of both eras is Oscar Isaac, who takes on a phenomenal dual role.

In the present day, we see Isaac as a cynical writer recruited by a dangerous mafia boss to authenticate and steal a priceless, original manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. As the trailer unfolds, the tension ramps up with glimpses of mob violence, shadowy betrayals, and intense encounters featuring heavyweights like Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, and Jason Momoa. Intercut with this modern crime story are lush, romantic sequences of Dante Alighieri himself agonizing over his epic masterpiece centuries ago. The trailer promises a movie that is part muscular crime thriller, part historical drama, and an absolute treat for cinephiles.

A Tale of Two Timelines: The Plot

Adapted from Nick Tosches’ acclaimed 2002 novel, the film is an epic meditation on art, greed, and immortality. The narrative parallels two distinct lives separated by centuries but united by a single manuscript.

In the 21st century, writer Nick Tosches is drawn into the lethal web of the black market when he is asked to verify an ancient text by a New York mobster. Unable to resist the allure of the literary treasure, Tosches decides to steal it for himself, triggering a deadly manhunt. Meanwhile, the 14th-century storyline dives into the mind of Dante Alighieri as he navigates faith, desire, and the painstaking creation of his legendary poem. The film explores how the hunger for beauty and meaning transcends time.

An Unparalleled Star Cast

The sheer star power assembled by director Julian Schnabel is staggering. Oscar Isaac anchors the film with his dual performance, supported by a powerhouse roster of Hollywood elites.
