How to Get to Heaven from Belfast Canceled: Why Netflix Ended It After Season 1

Great reviews, a UK chart-topper, and still no Season 2. Fans of Lisa McGee’s dark comedy thriller just got the news they didn’t want.

What Happened?

BroadcastNow first reported, and Netflix confirmed, that the eight-part series won’t return. It follows three close friends on a darkly funny hunt for the truth behind an old friend’s suspicious death. The show landed on Netflix on February 12, 2026, and critics and audiences largely loved it. Its road to the screen was bumpy, too: Channel 4 originally greenlit it in 2023, and it moved to Netflix in 2024.

Why Was It Canceled?

It comes down to viewership. The show was a solid local hit but didn’t travel far.

The show did chart in 16 regions in total, and its UK premiere episode pulled in 1.8 million viewers in seven days. Without a US breakthrough, though, the global numbers fell short.

Is There Good News?

Yes. Last month, Netflix announced a new project from McGee, and it may have been a hint of things to come. Titled Jig, it’s a mockumentary set in the eccentric world of Irish dancing. She’s reuniting with her Derry Girls collaborators Liz Lewin and Caroline Leddy, and Orchid Pictures’ Suzanne Mackie is producing. Cameras aren’t expected to roll until 2027, so patience is required.

What to Do Now?

• Rewatch Season 1: it works as a complete story with a satisfying mystery.
• Watch the cast elsewhere: the lead trio includes Roísín Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne.
• Look ahead to Jig: it’s McGee’s next Netflix comedy.
