Homebound Review: Ishaan Khatter & Vishal Jethwa Deliver Gut-Punching Performances

After a decade-long wait, ‘Homebound,’ Neeraj Ghaywan’s first feature in a decade, is tear-jerking and infuriating. The film has already created waves at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, earning critical acclaim and establishing itself as a stunning portrait of modern India’s systemic inequalities. Homebound has set the bar super high after it got the entire audience on their feet applauding for nine minutes.

Homebound Film Overview: Everything You Need to Know

Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound follows two childhood friends from a small North Indian village as they take an exam to become a police and chase a job that promises them the dignity they have long been denied.

A Story That Hits Close to Home

A drama in which aspirations collide with harsh political realities, its tale of impoverished young men trying to escape their circumstances proves to be both a moving character piece, as well as a searing indictment of modern India. The film centers around lifelong best friends Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), whose pursuit of government jobs becomes a metaphor for the larger struggles faced by marginalized communities.

“Homebound” journeys into the waiting process in the pursuit of government jobs. However, recruitment is seemingly put on hold despite Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan’s persistence (Vishal Jethwa) to make it big and break out of the bubble society has created for them.

Powerhouse Performances That Define Excellence

Ishaan Khatter delivers what critics are calling a career-defining performance as Shoaib. His portrayal of a young man caught between hope and despair showcases remarkable emotional depth and maturity.

Vishal Jethwa matches Khatter’s intensity with his nuanced portrayal of Chandan. Khatter and Jethwa have a natural, believable dynamic that lends the story much of its power and underpins it with a coming-of-age angle.

Their friendship forms the emotional core of the film, representing countless young Indians who find their dreams deferred by systemic barriers.
