Hogwarts Legacy has officially crossed the 40 million units sold worldwide, cementing its status as one of gaming’s biggest success stories. This magical milestone makes it the biggest game release in Warner Bros. Games history and positions it among the industry’s most commercially successful titles.

Hogwarts Legacy Hits 40M Sales Milestone

Sales Performance Overview

Milestone	Date	Units Sold
Launch	February 2023	12 million (2 weeks)
First Milestone	May 2023	15 million
Year-End	January 2024	24 million
Mid-Year	November 2024	30 million
Current Total	December 2025	40 million

Record-Breaking Achievement

The 40 million figure places Hogwarts Legacy in rare company, outselling major blockbusters including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at 35.04 million, Cyberpunk 2077 at 35 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 36.93 million units. This phenomenal success story spans multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Developed by Avalanche Software and published under the Portkey Games label, the open-world action RPG transported players to the 1800s wizarding world. As a fifth-year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, players explored familiar locations, discovered magical beasts, crafted potions, and mastered spell casting in an original storyline.

What’s Next for the Franchise

Warner Bros. Games previously confirmed that a sequel was their biggest priority, and with these sales numbers, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is practically guaranteed. The sequel was confirmed to be in production last year, though no gameplay footage or release timeline has been shared yet.

The game’s success comes as Warner Bros. Games faces a bidding war between Netflix and Paramount, with the acquisition potentially reshaping the gaming division’s future. Despite this uncertainty, the wizarding world franchise remains a cornerstone of Warner Bros.’ gaming portfolio alongside Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.

Currently, Hogwarts Legacy is available for free on Epic Games Store for a limited time, offering new players the chance to experience this magical adventure. For more gaming news and updates, visit the official Warner Bros. Games website.
